4.0 out of 5 stars a sabbath like none other!, April 6, 2011
This review is from: Sabbath: The Ancient Practices (Ancient Practices Series) (Paperback)
I have great admiration for Allender, president of Mars Hill graduate school in Seattle. His take on keeping the sabbath is unique; especially his suggestion that a bottle of wine be a part of the sabbath meal. He asked his wife to teach him how to cook so that he could prepare the weekly sabbath evening meal; intentionally making too much so that there would always be leftovers for the Sunday noon and evening meals. Thus, no cooking on the sabbath. "Grief is to be entered on the other six days, not on the sabbath. "....(it) needs to be postponed but not denied. "...long enough to choose to listen to the louder voice of commendation, not contempt;" Truly, King Jesus always has a voice of commendation for those He has made righteous; even amidst our grief.
His chapter on sabbath justice was very challenging: he and his wife read DISPLACED REFLECTIONS by Oddny Gumaer. It is about Burmese Karen refugees displaced by the civil war. Their active response to their sabbath reading prompted me to order that book. He recommends a sabbath walk with a companion: for both conversation(when God can speak) and silent observations of our Lord's creation(where He also speaks). In our ten years of living in Slovakia at the edge of a national forest we observed hundreds of families take their weekly 'sabbath' walks to be invigorated by nature(whether they were Christians or not!). I heartily recommend this book to all who would like to deepen their sabbath experience or begin one!
The publisher gave me this book so that I would review it.
